Sell courthouse? It's worth exploring - The historic landmark building needs probably up to $15 million worth of work, a daunting expense for the taxpayer. The freeholders voted last night to spend about $11 million over the next 10 years, but that does not really include a number of ancillary costs, including designs, consultant fees and more.

The Eddie Hazell Trio will offer a concert on Sunday, October 10, at 2:30 p.m., in the O'Connor Gallery, on the second floor of the Bayonne Public Library. The library is located at 31st Street and Avenue C. The concert is free. Handicapped access is available via the ground-level entrance on 31st Street.

Jazz guitarist and singer Eddie Hazell has made numerous recordings and has appeared in various jazz rooms throughout the United States. His jazz trio (comprised of Vincent LaBue on drums and Rick Crane on bass) provides soft, listenable, danceable jazz, both instrumental and vocal. They specialize in twentieth-century American composers such as Richard Rodgers, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Johnny Mercer, and Cole Porter.

On television, Eddie Hazell has appeared on The Kraft Music Hall, The Merv Griffin Show, A.M. New York, and the CBS Variety show: On Broadway. With a repertoire that runs from Mozart to Miles Davis, Eddie has produced eight albums and three singles for Columbia, Monmouth-Evergreen and Audiophile labels, winning the coveted Jazz Disc Award in Japan. Concert appearances have included New York University, the Overseas Press (Jazz) Club, The Watchung Arts Center, and many others.

Water Main Work to Cause Tuesday Night Water Service Outage

The Bayonne Municipal Utilities Authority reports that a scheduled repair of a damaged water main on Avenue "A" at West 23rd Street will cause a water outage on Tuesday night, October 12 from 11:00PM until about 3:00AM the following morning. The affected area involves Avenue A from 28th to 23rd Streets on Avenue A and Streets west to the Newark Bay including 537 and 535 Avenue A. Upon learning that the water is shut off, many people leave their faucets open only to have the water come rushing out when service is restored. Residents are advised to keep their plumbing fixtures and valves closed during this time period. Water service is scheduled to be fully restored during the early morning hours on Wednesday.

Repairs are necessitated by a leak on Avenue A between West 23rd and West 24th Streets.

Persons seeking more information regarding the repair can contact the Bayonne Municipal Utilities Authority at 201-339-3200.

Eight teens charged with rioting in Bayonne - Eight teenagers - six girls and two boys - were arrested in Bayonne Thursday afternoon following a riot on Broadway that sent two police officers to the hospital, police said.

I have heard from one source who witnessed this shameful event, that there were more than 40 rioters and many in the crowd were yelling "police brutality." By virtue of the fact that several officers were injured and none of the rioters were, I would doubt the police used inappropriate force. In my opinion, however, it would have been appropriate for them to make good use of their batons in this situation. Kudos to the BPD, however.

Library Digitizes Death Notices Going Back to 1960

Library Director Sneh Bains announced that the Bayonne Public Library has digitized Bayonne death notices going back to 1960. A year ago, the library contracted with Innovative Document Imaging to produce a CD-ROM collection of death notices, beginning with the period since 1987. The product includes images of newspaper death notices. Library patrons interested in family history will be able to search these indexed records at the library.

Mayor Joseph V. Doria, Jr. said, "I would like to thank the library for organizing this digitized collection and for continuing the project back into earlier years. It will be very useful for people interested in researching their family trees."

Funds permitting, the library plans to go back further into history with the project. Making use of a variety of daily and weekly newspapers that have covered Bayonne since the nineteenth century, the library can digitize death notices dating back to 1881.

Theatre Company Announces Concert for 56th Street Senior Center

Tempest Productions, a not-for-profit Hudson County professional theatre company, will be offering a concert series performance for its original production of "I See a Star" at the Bayonne 56th Street Senior Community Center on Friday, October 8, at 2 p.m. The center is located at 56th Street an Avenue B.

"I See a Star" will have its world premiere at the Jersey City Art Museum, 350 Montgomery Street, Jersey City, in November. Based on the tale of "The Little Match Girl" by Hans Christian Andersen, the show follows the adventures of Emma as she learns about life, love, and family.

This program is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/New Jersey Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts, and by funds from the Hudson County Office of Cultural and Heritage Affairs, Thomas A. DeGise, County Executive, and the Board of Chosen Freeholders.

Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade Comes to City Hall

The Avon Foundation announced that it will sponsor breast cancer awareness activities in Bayonne in late September and October. The foundation, a non-profit organization associated with the Avon cosmetics company, raises funds and awareness for access to health care and finding a cure for breast cancer. The Avon Foundation will have a table at the front of City Hall from Wednesday, September 29, through Friday, October 1, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Avon representatives will distribute literature and offer promotional items from the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade. Mayor Joseph V. Doria, Jr. will issue a proclamation saluting the Avon Foundation's efforts.

Avon representatives Martha Harney and Adela Revilla will staff the table at City Hall.

Approximately 212,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, including 1,300 men. About 40,200 will die from the disease. Early detection can help save lives. There is a 97% five-year survival rate when breast cancer is caught before it spreads to other parts of the body. The Avon Foundation provides the public with information about breast cancer screening and diagnostic and treatment services.

Leaf Bags Available at City Hall for Fall Recycling

Mayor Joseph V. Doria, Jr. has announced the City of Bayonne will conduct curbside pick-up of autumn leaves on Mondays in the fall, beginning Monday, October 11. The pick-ups will take place citywide on Mondays only through December 13. Residents may place leaves in barrels or in paper bags. Plastic bags are unacceptable and will be rejected for pick-up.

Leaf bags are available at the Health Department, Room 18, in the back corridor at City Hall. They are free of charge. There is a limit of five bags per customer.

Doria asked residents and business people, "If you see leaves accumulating on a sewer head by your home or business this autumn, please add those leaves to your leaf recycling bag or barrel. During Hurricane Ivan's visit to Bayonne on September 18, there were complaints that leaves were blocking the flow of water into the sewers. When you rake up leaves each weekend, it would help if you could remove leaves from any sewer heads around your property. This kind of private citizen initiative would be a great supplement to the cleaning efforts of the Bayonne Municipal Utilities Authority and the Public Works Department."

As a result of state law, it is now illegal to dispose of leaves with regular garbage. Bayonne residents can comply with this law by either backyard composting or by putting their leaves out for collection on the designated day. The term "leaves" means foliage only. Specifically excluded from this definition are grass clippings, hedge clippings, tree parts, shrubbery and other types of vegetative waste.

Leaf collection will start early on designated Mondays, at 6:00 a.m., so residents should put their leaves out on Sunday evenings to ensure pick-up.

Wepner's 'Rocky' Lawsuit to go forward (pun intended)

From today's Newsday.com article: Former heavyweight boxer Chuck Wepner's lawsuit against Sylvester Stallone will go forward, although the actor was given some relief by a federal judge. U.S. District Judge Katharine S. Hayden denied Stallone's bid to dismiss the lawsuit, permitting a trial on one of Wepner's claims: that Stallone inappropriately used Wepner's name to promote his "Rocky" movies. But Hayden dismissed Wepner's two other claims: that Stallone was unjustly enriched by trading on Wepner's life story and that Wepner suffered by relying on Stallone's promises.

While this would appear to be a positive thing - for NJ Transit - the riders during rush hours are facing the unsafe circumstance of having to struggle for standing room from points as far north as Exchange Place (all the way to 45th St. and then some).

A suggestion to NJT - how about a few more trains during peak ridership hours. Better yet, since the station platforms are much longer than the trains (and I imagine this was done to accomodate more cars), how about adding another car to the existing one?

Saw the photo in the BEST newspaper of Bruce Dillin holding a 150 year old lobster he caught and planned to have stuffed. Am I an animal lover - yes! Am I overly zealous about animal rights - no! The schedule for Bayonne's Hollywood on the Hudson Festival is out. The festival, two days of "film, fun and family activities" slated for Saturday in the city's central business district, is being co-sponsored by the city's Urban Enterprise Zone program and Bayonne Town Center, with the cooperation of the Polish American Home.

All the activities will be happening between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. at Del Monte Drive and West 21st Street. Here's the movie clock: "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" will be screened at 11 a.m., "Casablanca" at 1:20 p.m., "Toy Story" at 5:15 p.m. and "Forrest Gump" at 7 p.m.

People are invited to meet and greet entertainers who resemble Austin Powers, Bette Midler and Elvis at 1, 3 and 4 p.m., respectively, and with surprise cartoon characters at 1:15 and 4:15 p.m. All activities are free. For more information, you may call (201) 858-6357.
